Cherry Juice As A Preventative Medicine

A cherry is a fruit that not only looks inviting but ongoing research is establishing the reasons why it has anti inflammatory properties to help diseases such as arthritis. Most people when they are in pain don’t care how drugs work, they just want the pain to go away. A very complex chemical process occurs, as a series of enzymes (cyclooxygenase) that are involved at the injury site, cause the inflammation to occur. The inflammation, is a defence mechanism of the body to protect the damaged tissue or cartlidge underneath.

It’s the humble cherry that is making life for pain suffers more bearable as the complex chemistry contained within the fruit provides a protective function and prevents unwanted symptoms such as damage to the stomach wall. It is becoming the preferred ‘medication’ of choice and is a natural alternative. The nutrients, contained in the berry include a range of antioxidants including melatonin, kaempferol and quercetin, which have similar anti-inflammatory effects to nonsterodial anti-inflammatory drugs (ie aspirin and ibuprofen).

There seems to be strong evidence that having cherries in your diet is better than taking man-made drugs. Side effects of these drugs include acid stomach and constipation. The flavanoids and anti-oxidants tend to protect the lining of the stomach wall and the acid feeling does not happen.

Consistency in consumption is the key to its success, but best if taken in a natural/puree state. Research has found that pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, gout and fibromylgia reduces with regular intake. It is believed to be more effective than most over the counter drugs, as it is producing the same if not better results and is able to inhibit the enzyme activity associated with drugs.
